Will you?

Will you do what you do, will you want what you want, will you say what you say, will you love who you love...

IF...

No one's going to see what you do, what you have, no one's going to hear what you say and no one knows who you love. If there's no judgement on everything and no benchmark to anything, will you still be doing, wanting, saying and loving XXXXX like now? Of cos...XXXX's an unknown, fill it in yourself.

It's like..

If no one reads my blogs...will I still be writing a blog? I'll be better off keeping a personal diary right?

If getting a honours degree is only of personal pleasure & achievement, no one else cares if you've got a degree or not, will I still spend 4 toiling years in NTU mugging & joining in the paper chase? Will there even be a paper chase phenomenon in the first place? Maybe not.

Will I want to be slim and trim if no one's going to see that I've got a good figure? This I can't answer it myself...the whole world is engulfed in this "stick thin and small is beautiful" mindset...I think if girls can grow to a nano size...they'll probably be deemed the most beautiful creature on earth. Duh!!

Will one want to get an ipod nano over an ipod shuffle if no one's gonna say, "Wow..cool! So pretty, so seh! (in envy)"? Probably not, unless you really need a bigger storage space? Then again, why not go for cheaper Creative if not for the image?!

Will I still love who I love if there's no one to judge whether we're a match made in heaven? Will I still shower my family with the same kind of love if no one's gonna sing praises of me being a wonderful daughter/grand daughter/sister? These...I think it's a definite YES...guess only love is saved from external judgement.

Are we essentially externally motivated creatures? Yes...No?

    Yes....No....
I do agree that love is safe from external judgement as it doesnt most of the time depend on how and what people think of that love watsoeva.

Different people will answer yes and no to the various issues raised.
If no1 reads our blogs, guess we would really rather keep a personal diary instead.

If not for the paper chase, think many people like me would have chosen a different course altogether. Not for the sake of the degree, but for the sake of knowledge and pursue where our interests lie.

nano size?wow..so scary..wait go out need wear helmet..(scared people will step onto u -_-|||) Guess the many so-called external motivations are socially constructed and self-emphasised. We ourselves are already socially moulded that perhaps we think, for eg, thin and small is better. Well i donno..

guess it all a mixture. Sometimes u did/say/want things 'coz u really feel like it..doing things without expecting anytg in return. Yet perhaps sometimes, u did it so oftenly it becomes a habit and with the reaction/praises from others, it further tells urself that what u did is good, is great, so u shld keep on doing??? bleah.....hahaha....dreamer's brain malfunction le.dunno if u get mi..haha..neway, i tot abt this be4 too...n like always, there's no answer =)

if no one believes in u..
    will u believe in urself?

    who do u fight for?.
    for others or for urself?

    seek unconditonal stuff..
unconditional love from parents who will love u no matter how u are.

unconditonal friends who will be there .

stay true to urself while maintaining relevence to the society..

ah ru-> Yah, I get what you mean. It's just like why I never go into climbing like u gals..sec sch climb before but maybe cos I don't excel in it..I don't feel the interest..I don't pursue it. haha, your brain's still functioning perfectly!! still can come up with the nano size joke..*nod nod*

zen bao bao-> I think it's not about believing in oneself and fighting for oneself in this case. I believe in myself & I fight for myself..even fight for others when there's a need to. But now, it's more of because society depicts that "this" is desirable and that's why everyone thinks "this" is good and that's why we motivate ourselves to attain "this". Are we doing things because people are passing judgements? If we take away the society's view and everyone else's view, will "this" still appear to be such a desirable goal to us? For example, in some countries, fat women are viewed as beautiful (though its not healthy to be so). But the fatter you are, the more beautiful you are. In such an environment, will females still want to be stick thin like here in Asia? That's why I think we are still externally motivated to a certain extent but not totally of cos. Like what you mentioned, there's always unconditional love from various people in our life. That's why I think only true unconditional love like that of our parents is unaffected by external influences:)
